The Washington Post’s Jay Mathews has been ranking the most challenging schools in the country for 15 years. There are more than 1,900 schools on the America’s Most Challenging High Schools list, and Lanier High is one of the best!<!--more-- Read more>

Most of those at the top of the list are small, both the public schools and the sampling of private schools. American Indian Public Charter High School of Oakland, Calif., placed No. 1 on the 2013 list because its students enroll in Advanced Placement courses in the ninth grade and eventually take more of those college-level classes and exams per student than any school in the Washington area.

America’s Most Challenging High Schools ranks schools through an index formula that’s a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as graduates.

View the Post’s full list of national rankings here: http://apps.washingtonpost.com/highschoolchallenge/

A quick review of Gwinnett schools and how they ranked in Georgia show these locally relevant results:

Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology #1 in GA (#5 in the South and #18 in the Nation)

Lanier HS #8 in GA (#144 in the South and #227 in the Nation)

North Gwinnett HS #11 in GA (#160 in the South and #254 in the Nation)

There are many test dates at the end of the school year, read this for a list of which test are when.

Performance Final exams are a significant effect on the grade, valued at 5-10% of the semester grade depending on the department policy. Those exam dates are:

Math – April 19th

Language Arts – May 6th and May 7th

Social Studies – April 23rd

Foreign Language – April 26th

Science – May 3rd

Chorus – March 7th

Tech Theater III – March 23rd

Orchestra – w/o April 23rd

Yearbook – April 27th

Band – May 2nd

Intro to Theater – May 3rd

Art – w/o May 6th

Multiple Choice Exam dates are May 20, 21, and 22. They are organized by period. Each exam is 2 hours, with 10-minute break between. May 20 is for Periods 1 and 2, May 21 is for Periods 3 and 4, May 22 is for Periods 5 and 6. Students are dismissed after the exams.

End of Course Dates (EOCT) are in early May, and we will have an adjusted schedule for those dates so students have a full 2-hour window for their test. Those dates are:

Language Arts – May 1st and May 2nd

Math – May 6th and May 7th

Biology – May 9th and May 10th

Social Studies – May 13th and May 14th

Finally, Advanced Placement (AP) tests are in the month of May as well. You can see a list of dates for those exams here:

Wow, is it really going to be the class of 2017?!

For those who applied, you’re in!! We are lucky to have a few more seats than applicants, so we can take you all!!

Here’s what will happen next: in the next week or two, Lanier Middle Students will receive confirmation sheets. If you have been listed as a CDAT student, the confirmation sheet will list “Placeholder” as a class. This is just a way to identify a CDAT student, not a name of a class.

If a student is listed with “Placeholder”, but does not want to participate in CDAT, they can drop this during the add/drop period, before March 28.

If a student would like to add CDAT, we only have about 10 seats left. To be added to our roster, the student needs to email a CDAT application (see below) to mreilly@lanierhs.org. The next 10 applicants will be accepted. You should also add this during your add/drop period on your official paperwork, once you receive confirmation from Mr. Reilly (I will usually respond to your email application within the hour, I’m online too much!).

Questions? Email mreilly@lanierhs.org
